Catalonia by Train with Children: A Six-Day Plan
A child-paced six-day train itinerary with Barcelona, Montserrat, Girona, short station walks, family-room checks, and rain alternatives.

The family version of a Catalonia rail itinerary needs fewer bases, shorter sightseeing blocks, and an honest answer to one question: can every child carry or roll their own bag? Six days work with four nights in Barcelona and one in Girona. Montserrat becomes a return excursion, while Girona supplies the feeling of a second city without a chain of hotel changes.
- Shape: Barcelona arrival and three city days; Montserrat excursion; one Girona night; return.
- Daily effort: one anchor activity plus a park, playground, beach, or long meal.
- Budget: roughly €1,450–2,700 for two adults and two children sharing suitable rooms, before flights.
- Reserve: legal room occupancy, child rail fares where relevant, Montserrat transport, and headline attractions.
- Carry: one compact case per person, water, snacks, and a lightweight layer rather than a large stroller plus several bags.
The Catalan Tourist Board’s family exploration guide emphasizes discovery at a child’s pace. That principle matters more than forcing a family through a larger route.
Barcelona needs a neighborhood rhythm
Use the first afternoon for the area around the hotel. A playground, market snack, and early dinner allow the family to recover without wasting a prepaid attraction. On the next two days, pair one reserved place with open space: a Gaudí interior and a park, or a museum and the waterfront.
Metro stairs, crowded buses, and old-city paving make a compact folding stroller easier than a large travel system. Confirm lift access at the hotel and ask whether reception can hold luggage. Breakfast inclusion can be worth more than a small rate saving when four people need to leave for a train at the same time.

Montserrat is a transport day with a mountain in the middle
Leave large luggage in Barcelona and take only a day pack. Choose the rack railway or cable-car connection before departure, because the branch point and tickets differ. At the monastery, agree on one short viewpoint walk and one cultural visit. Do not promise the summit to children on the basis of an adult walking time.
Allow a full day from hotel door to hotel door and carry lunch or verify the food plan. Mountain weather can be colder and windier than Barcelona. If low cloud removes the views, shorten the outdoor section and use the basilica and exhibition spaces; if transport disruption begins early, replace Montserrat with a city science museum rather than gambling on the last return.

Pack for Girona on the fifth morning
Compare Barcelona–Girona train choices with the actual family ages entered. Check fare conditions, luggage handling, and whether the train uses the central stations you expect.
Take a morning departure and leave bags at the Girona hotel. The old city rises east of the river, so begin along the flatter Onyar bridges and add cathedral-area steps only while energy remains. Children who enjoy walls and towers may prefer a short section of the city wall; others will get more from gelat and an open square.
Reserve dinner or eat early on busy weekends. A family room must state its maximum occupancy and bed arrangement. A sofa bed, cot, and adjoining-room request are different products, and breakfast may be charged by age.
The sixth day keeps a protected route home
If the onward flight is late, spend the morning in Girona and travel south after lunch. If it is before mid-afternoon, sleep in Barcelona on night five instead. Separate rail and air bookings do not wait for each other, and a child's need for a toilet or food stop consumes margins that look generous on paper.
Budget €120–240 per night for a family room as a broad shoulder-season planning range, with school holidays often higher. Add €35–65 per person per day for food, local transport, and modest admissions; young children may cost less, but family attractions and snacks quickly replace the saving. Price the real party and dates rather than multiplying an adult solo budget.
This itinerary succeeds by creating familiar mornings in Barcelona and one small adventure to Girona. If the family dislikes packing, keep all six nights in Barcelona and make Girona a long day trip. The best family rail plan is the one in which the final platform still feels manageable.
