Barcelona, Girona or Reus Airport: Where Should You Fly Into?
Compare Catalonia's three main visitor airports by the complete transfer to Barcelona, Girona, the Costa Brava or Tarragona.

The cheapest flight to Catalonia can become the expensive one after landing. Girona and Reus are useful airports when they place you near the first bed; neither is a Barcelona suburb. Compare airfare only after adding the final bus, a realistic wait, and the cost of a missed last connection.
The simplest rule is geographic: use Barcelona-El Prat for Barcelona and the widest onward network, Girona-Costa Brava for Girona or the northern coast, and Reus for Reus, Tarragona, Salou or the central Costa Daurada. Break that rule only when the saving survives the complete door-to-door calculation.
Airport choice in one minute
| First base | Usually the best airport | Main reason | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barcelona | Barcelona-El Prat | Multiple city links and late-day resilience | T1 and T2 use different rail/bus details |
| Girona | Girona-Costa Brava | Direct airport buses avoid travelling south first | Service is tied to a smaller flight programme |
| Begur, Palafrugell or northern Costa Brava | Girona-Costa Brava | Shorter road transfer in season | Coastal buses can be seasonal or indirect |
| Tarragona or Reus | Reus | Short local transfer | A sparse arrival may miss the convenient bus |
| Salou or Cambrils | Reus | Resort buses may meet flight periods | Frequency varies with the aviation season |
| Multi-region rail trip | Barcelona-El Prat | Best access to Barcelona Sants | Crossing the city still takes time |
Allow €6–25 per person for a scheduled public transfer when the airport matches the destination. A private transfer can move into three figures, especially between the secondary airports and Barcelona. Verify the quote for the exact terminal, date and number of passengers.
Compare flights only after selecting the first base and write the landing time beside the last usable connection. A €35 airfare saving is not a saving if it produces a €140 taxi.

Barcelona-El Prat wins on connection choice
Barcelona-El Prat has terminals T1 and T2, linked by a free airport shuttle. The railway station is at T2; passengers arriving at T1 who want the train must add the terminal transfer. Metro L9 Sud serves both terminals but approaches central Barcelona from the southwest, so it is not automatically the fastest route to every hotel.
TMB lists the 2026 airport Metro ticket at €5.90 and explains which longer-duration passes include airport travel on its current fare page. The ordinary T-casual is not valid for entry or exit at the airport Metro stations. That distinction matters when a visitor assumes every city ticket covers L9 Sud.
Aerobús serves both terminals on separate routes and is often the easiest answer for Plaça Catalunya or Plaça Espanya. The R2 Nord train is useful for Barcelona Sants and Passeig de Gràcia when its terminal transfer and timetable fit. A taxi becomes rational for several travelers with luggage or a hotel poorly placed for the public options, but compare the whole group price.
Use the airport's official bus and onward-connection page to identify the terminal-specific choices. For an onward train, leave a large buffer at Sants rather than treating the flight's scheduled landing as station arrival time. Passport control, baggage, the T1–T2 shuttle and city travel can consume the apparent margin.

Girona Airport is for Girona and the northern coast
Girona-Costa Brava Airport lies south of Girona city. It has no railway station at the terminal. Scheduled buses connect it with Girona bus station, Barcelona's Estació del Nord and, depending on season and operator, Costa Brava towns.
Aena's Girona Airport bus page identifies the Girona, Barcelona and coastal connections and sends travelers to the operators for current times and fares. Some departures are coordinated with flights, but “coordinated” is not a guarantee that a severely delayed arrival will retain a bus indefinitely.
For a Girona old-town stay, this airport can remove an unnecessary journey through Barcelona. For Begur, Palafrugell or another coastal base, compare a direct seasonal bus with airport–Girona–coast combinations. The direct route may be quicker; the connection through Girona may be easier to recover if a flight is late.
For central Barcelona, Girona Airport is a calculated compromise. The airport bus ends at Estació del Nord rather than at the door of most hotels. Add the wait after landing, the intercity bus and the city transfer before comparing it with a Barcelona-El Prat arrival.
Reus Airport belongs to the Costa Daurada
Reus Airport is useful for Reus, Tarragona and the resort corridor toward Salou and Cambrils. It is not the same place as Reus railway station, Camp de Tarragona high-speed station or Tarragona city station.
The official Reus Airport bus information lists Line 50 toward Reus, with stops that include the city's rail and bus stations. It also identifies operator links toward Tarragona, Barcelona, PortAventura, Salou and Cambrils. Timetables can follow flight schedules or operating seasons, so check the dated operator page rather than assuming an all-day urban frequency.
Choose Reus when the first bed is on the Costa Daurada and the arrival has a confirmed bus or transfer. For Barcelona, the attraction is usually airfare rather than geography. Count the airport wait, the long coach and the final city movement. A late landing can erase both the saving and the first evening.
Compare the exact airport-to-hotel transfer after checking the official bus schedule; a generic route result may not reflect a seasonal flight-day service.
Price the return journey before buying the flight
Outbound arrivals receive most of the attention, but early departures are where secondary-airport plans fail. A 06:30 flight can require a private transfer or an airport hotel even when the inbound bus was convenient. Price both directions and note the required airport arrival time.
For two travelers, record four figures before purchase: airfare difference, public-transfer total, private-transfer fallback and any extra hotel night. Add the value of lost time only after the cash comparison is clear. A northern-coast holiday may genuinely be easier through Girona; a Tarragona weekend may genuinely favor Reus. The mistake is using either as “Barcelona airport” without doing the last-leg arithmetic.
If a flight lands after the final practical connection, do not rely on finding an affordable taxi queue for a long intercity journey. Reserve a cancellable airport-area bed or a confirmed transfer. The correct airport is the one that still gets you safely to the first room when the aircraft is an hour late.
